Roofing FAQs | All Your Roof Concerns, Answered!
Q: Do I need a new roof if mine is leaking?
A: Not necessarily, it may not be the roof in the first place. You can check yourself by reading our free how-to guides, or call a professional roofer for an evaluation.
Q: How do I find a roofer?
A: The best place to start is friends or family to see if they’ve had a positive roofing experience. There are many online and in the phone book, do a quick “Kitchener Roofing” or “London Ontario Roofing” search to start comparing. It’s very important you compare at least 3 quotes and credible roofing companies, and know how to read a quote. See our how to choose a roofer section.
Q: What type or brand of shingles should I choose?
A: There are dozens of brands and types of shingles, and about 6 major manufacturers. Your contractor should offer more than one manufacturer, and should be able to explain the difference of construction of the different types of shingles. Ratings start at 25 years for the 3-tab shingle, from 30 years for the laminate shingle, and go to lifetime (50 year coverage for the high end series). Our shingle selection page shows you the different manufacturers we supply. Be sure to understand the shingle warranty. Below is a quick overview of what types of shingle we sell:
25-year: We rarely install this shingle as it is most susceptible to high winds and lasts the least amount of time. It costs a few dollars a bundle less than a fiberglass laminate, thus we feel its cost savings does not warrant its installation. Most roofers charge more for the installation of laminates, but our principle at CVH is to work to move homeowners to laminates, and this is demonstrated in our pricing.
30-year: The 30-year laminate is what we sell as an entry-level material. It offers good value for cost, as fiberglass laminates will likely last more than 25 years in Southern Ontario (assuming proper installation and depending on many other factors such as venting). Architectural, or fiberglass laminates as they’re known are layered to become one piece rather than a 3-tab design which makes them much stronger and thicker resulting in wind resistance and longer lasting.
40-year: The best value for homeowners looking for cost effective quality. It might cost $4-$6 more per bundle (approx. 32 sq ft.) than the 30 year laminate, but it costs less for the years it will last.
“Lifetime Shingle”: A 50-year shingle is the best bet when comparing to other materials for roofing, as the warranty is comparable to other materials. These shingles come in a large variety of designs that rival slates, shakes and metals in looks and are usually significantly less to install. (see slate look shingles on our products page)
